60 organizations, yes, sixty…That’s a lot of organizations, just launched a campaign to urge the US Congress to beef up privacy laws in the United States! Let’s break it down:

Why this Campaign is Important?

The campaign is an effort to help strengthen the online privacy of US citizens by ensuring they have more control over the data they are sharing online and who it’s shared with.

In today’s world, personal data can be used for a variety of purposes, from serving personalized ads to cross-referencing incomes and addresses with your social media profiles. Data privacy is becoming increasingly threatened.

What You Can Do to Help Protect Your Privacy

If you’re feeling pretty “1984” about all this, I hear ya! But, there are some things you can do to help protect your own privacy. Here are a few ideas:

  • Be smart about what you share online and remember that once it’s out there, it’s hard to take back.

  • Check to see if your favorite websites have a privacy policy and read it to find out what data they collect and how they use it.

  • Use caution before clicking links in emails and on social media websites. Cyber-scammers are always trying to get their hands on your personal data.
